Health Benefits of Salmon and Canned Salmon Recipes

In reading  Real Food: What to Eat and Why, I have been learning about the health benefits of  wild salmon. I knew that salmon contained healthy Omega-3 fats.  However, I did not understand the importance of these fats.  Did you know that Omega-3 Fats...
  • Regulate blood sugar levels and fat burning.
  • Prevent heart disease.
  • Are being prescribed for depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.
  • Help to prevent diabetes.
  • Deficiency in children is linked to dyslexia, poor motor skills and ADHD.
  • Deficiency in teens makes them more prone to anger, hostility, and violence.
For these reasons, I have decided to make an effort to incorporate wild salmon into my family's diet.  Being on a budget does not always allow for salmon fillets or steaks, though.  Therefore, I have been looking for some recipes in which I can use canned wild salmon.   Whole Foods has canned wild sockeye salmon for $2.49/can.  Not bad.

Here is what I have found so far...
How about you?  Do you have a yummy, healthy salmon recipe?  If so, please share.

We eat a lot of canned Salmon. I make Salmon loaf that the family loves. We also make Salmon pattys and add fried rice.

I will have to try some of the recipes you have linked to, they sound yummy!

Another place to buy canned Salmon is the dollar stores!

I tend to shy away from the canned salmon because I'm a chicken. The skin and bones gives me the heeby-jeebies.

I think though, what I may do is put a whole can into the food processor and just mince the heck out of it, then make salmon patties or whatever.

Have you tried Paula Deen's Salmon Croquettes yet? I actually wandered into that airing and have been thinking of giving it a try - no one here likes salmon at the moment so I'm wondering if this recipe would make it more like fish sticks.

Seriously, my 10yr old only likes fish sticks so far - they do have a fairly healthy version at Trader Joe's - but still, I know we need to get more fish into our diet.

Thanks! I recently read that same book which has inspired me to incorporate more fish - just canned wild salmon at this point due to budget! I appreciate a few more ideas as I have only made salmon patties. We do enjoy these with sweet potato fries though!

Motherhen, I am with you. The skin and bones are fun to pick at. I usually try to talk my husband into that! You will have to let me know how that food processor idea works out. Thanks for stopping by!

Anonymous, Yes, canned salmon is a good option for those on a budget. I hope you are able to try one (or more) of these recipes. We love sweet potato fries, too! Yum.

Debbie, I have never heard of using rice in the patties, but I bet it is good. Enjoy the recipes!

My family all love salmon patties and I love Emeril's idea of serving with a poached egg and hollandaise. We like those things too!
