Lee and Low Books

This giveaway is closed.
The lucky winner is Mama Jenn.
Thanks to all who entered!

Lee & Low Books, an independent children's book publisher specializing in diversity, recently sent me several books to review.

Yum! ¡MmMm! ¡Qué Rico! Brotes de las Américas

Yum! ¡MmMm! ¡Qué Rico! Brotes de las Américas is a collection of haiku which focuses on foods commonly found in The Americas. Accompanying each haiku are information and fun facts about the foods. Children will delight in reading and learning about chiles, chocolate, papaya, and much more. The illustrations are bright, colorful, and capture the mood of the haiku perfectly.

Pat Mora, the author, has a beautiful website full of information and activities. In fact, on the Educator and Librarian page there are lists of activities for each of the books she has written. Here is the activity list for Yum! ¡MmMm! ¡Qué Rico! Brotes de las Américas.

This book is an ideal choice for introducing young poets to haiku. It is also the perfect selection to teach elementary aged children about the culture and foods of The Americas. It could be used in an ESL or Spanish class, as well.

*Please note: This is a Spanish title.

Elizabeti's Doll

Elizabeti's Doll (Elizabeti Series) is a book to which many little girls can easily relate. It is about Elizabeti, a little Tanzanian girl, whose mother has just had a baby. After watching her mother care for her new baby brother, Elizabeti decides that she needs a baby to care for, as well. Elizabeti begins searching her village for a doll. She soon finds a unique, but perfect doll, which she names Eva. Elizabeti loves and cares for Eva, but one day something bad happens... Eva turns up missing. As she searches for her beloved Eva, Elizabeti realizes just how much she loves her.

This book would be a treasured gift for any child with a new sibling.

In addition to fabulous books, Lee and Low also has a website full of useful resources. They have an educator's section with pages for teachers and homeschooling families, a calendar page that offers book suggestions to correlate with particular dates and holidays, and a page of fun, educational activities that correlate to Lee and Low titles.

For this giveaway ~ Lee and Low Books is offering one winner Elizabeti's Doll and
Yum! ¡MmMm! ¡Qué Rico! Brotes de las Américas.

Oh, this is great! I have just started a category on my blog called "Brown Like Me" that features characters that are brown like my daughter. I had failed to realize the importance of her reading books with children that look like her!!! Anyhow, we are reading "Being Friends" by Karen Beaumont right now!! It is about how two girls who become best friends despite their differences.

We've posted about this at Winning Readings:

http://winningreadings.blogspot.com/2009/09/lee-and-low-books.html

We've done lots of traveling and enjoyed the diversity of the world that way. One of the books 2yo Esme loves is Willie Waddle by Katherine Jones Carter, which makes the point that our differences don't make us better or worse, just better suited for some things rather than others...
