I recently found Baby Love Blankies, an adorable Etsy shop, while looking for a birthday gift for Jesse Bear's "best bud". This shop has the cutest stuff! Check it out. I contacted the owner and she was kind enough to send me an Itsy Bitsy I Spy Bag for Jesse Bear and I to review.

For those of you who have never seen one of these, an I Spy Bag is sort of like a bean bag with a little window. Baby Love Blankie's are filled with small poly pellets. However, they can also be filled with rice, dried beans, or small beads. Here's the fun part ~ They also contain small treasures which children can "spy" by moving the contents around. All of the treasures that are inside the bag are listed on an attached card.

When I received our I Spy Bag I did not tell JB. Instead, I put it into my purse, so that I could whip it out during a time when we were waiting at the Doctor's office, stuck in traffic, etc. I used that little lifesaver for the first time the other day. We were running errands around lunchtime (huge mistake on my part) and JB was getting very cranky. I had one more stop to make at Trader Joe's (my favorite food store), but he was losing it quickly. So, I put JB in a grocery cart and handed him the I Spy Bag. I explained what it was and told him to find as many treasures as he could. I am pleased to say that this kept him occupied and happy for the duration of our grocery trip. Thank you, Baby Love!

While the mom in me likes how the I Spy Bag can occupy my preschooler, the educator in me likes it for different reasons. I like how moving the contents around to "spy"the little treasures is great for fine motor practice, and talking about/describing the items found is a fun way to practice vocabulary development.
